When a family member discloses that they are transsexual, the reactions of those around them can vary enormously. Many families experience a period of disbelief — surely this cannot be real? — followed by a range of emotions including shock, grief, anger and, in time, acceptance.

It is important to understand that transsexualism has physiological origins. Research has shown that gender identity is established in early foetal development. It is not a lifestyle choice, nor the result of upbringing. Gender is our psychological sex — our personal experience of being male or female.

Transsexualism concerns gender identity, not sexual orientation. These are distinct and separate aspects of a person's identity.

The fundamental person was always there and remains the same. What changes is their outer presentation, not their core character, their love for you, or their values.

Our advice to families: maintain your relationship if you can, seek out support groups such as Depend, and help to share accurate information with those around you.
